Vestibule 102 at The Chrysler Museum of Art Glass Studio
This installation of ideas, which represented by light is inspired by Steffen Dam’s work, The Owl of Minerva Takes Flight in the Dusk, (seen below). The work itself references a ‘wunderkammer’, also known as a ‘cabinet of curiosity’, originating during the European Renaissance. In a way these were the world’s first museums and would inspire collecting and the categorization of history. Interestingly, these objects, (sometimes falsified) came to symbolize one’s journeys and memories—a unique manifestation of the owner’s own special universe. The Chrysler today continues this tradition of preserving history. The quotes you read were taken from the viewer responses at the museum and ask you to consider your own interpretations of art, its collection and the act of collecting.
